코로나 19 팬데믹을 전후해서 써 놓았던 서른 편의 글을 2024년 한창 여름이 시작하려는 5월 말에 전자책으로 내 놓습니다. 한글과 영문으로 되어 있어서 한국인에게는 영어공부, 영어권 사람에게는 한국어 공부가 될 수도 있습니다. 이 글을 쓴 저는 이제 막 쉰 살이 지난 아저씨입니다. 이 책 표지그림은 저의 조카딸인 제시카가 삼촌 생일이라고 선물로 그려 준 것입니다.
I am pleased to present a collection of thirty essays, written before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, now available as an e-book at the end of May 2024, just as summer begins. This book includes both Korean and English texts, which can serve as English study material for Koreans and Korean study material for English speakers. I, the author of these essays, have just turned fifty. The cover illustration of this book is a birthday gift from my niece, Jessica.

그 아이가 이제 사춘기를 앓고 있고 얼마 전 부모님을 따라 멤피스로 이사를 갔습니다. 지금 살고 있는 내쉬빌에서는 어머니와 큰 조카 제인이 함께 있습니다. 저의 글에 유쾌한 영감을 준 조카들이 점점 자라면서 어른이 되어 가고 저는 노년을 향해 가면서 글로 세월의 자취를 남깁니다. 이제 다섯 살인 조카 다니엘은 농부가 되려는 지 땅 파는 걸 아주 좋아합니다.
Jessica, who is now going through adolescence, recently moved to Memphis with her parents. Meanwhile, in Nashville, where I currently reside, I live with my mother and my elder niece, Jane. As my nieces, who have been a delightful source of inspiration for my writing, grow up and become adults, I find myself heading towards old age, leaving traces of time through my essays. My youngest nephew, Daniel, now five years old, loves digging in the ground and dreams of becoming a farmer.

오래 전 돌아가신 아버지께서도 뒤뜰에 연못을 만드신다고 땅을 파셨는데 늦둥이 다니엘을 보면 아버지의 모습이 떠 오릅니다. 이 책에 포함된 서른 편의 수필은 수 년간에 가지고 있었던 저의 마음이며 이 마음을 냄비에 넣어 끓입니다. 바라기는 이 국물이 맛있는 독서가 되어 여러분에게 즐거움으로 남기를 바랍니다.
When I see Daniel, I am reminded of my late father, who once dug a pond in our backyard. The thirty essays included in this book are a reflection of my thoughts over the years, simmered together in a pot. I hope that this broth turns into a delightful reading experience and brings joy to you.
