The Handshake

On a cold winter morning,
I shook hands with him.
His hand was warm.

We didn’t hold on for long—
Just a brief greeting,
A momentary touch—

Yet in the creases of his weathered hand,
Something lingered—
Perhaps longing,
perhaps pain

His hand was warm,
Perhaps because it had so often reached out first,
Grasping the hands of many others.

Such a hand—
Surely, its heart is warm too.
Wherever it may be, it could make someone’s winter
A little less cold.

I look down at my own hands.
And ask—
Have you ever been
Such a warm hand to someone?
